OVERVIEW

In 2016 we integrated environmental sustainability into the core of our business through the key pillar of sustainable manufacturing we call “Products Made Better” which will change how we make what we make and embed our environmental commitments in our manufacturing processes.

This pillar takes on the work done by the Environmental Sustainability teams over the years and focus on sustainable manufacturing. We have identified several key areas which we believe are material to all our stakeholders and to us as a responsible business.

CHAMPION CLIMATE ACTION

At MAS we recognize that climate change is a real challenge to our communities, our ecology and our operations but we also realize it poses an opportunity to do what is right and to make a real difference in how we operate as a business. We have, through our strategy looked at making a net positive impact through our operations and we intend to collaborate with both private and public sectors to get to this goal. We will expect the same commitment and urgency of action from government and the industry as a whole as a collective and lasting vision for the future.

MANAGE OUR FOOTPRINT

The challenge of managing our ecological footprint is a big one as MAS continues to spread its reach both in Sri Lanka and across the world. While our foreign facilities have slowly begun to join this journey in 2016 our operation in Sri Lanka has always been vigilant about the environmental impact of our growing manufacturing operation. As part of managing our footprint we will constantly seek new ways to go beyond just measuring our impact and make sure we not just do less harm but investigate how we can make a positive impact on the environment through our presence.

SUPPORT A THRIVING PLANET

Deforestation continues in Sri Lanka at a rate of 8,000 hectares of forest cover per year. We took a long look inwards and understood that the land acquired and built on by MAS was a climax forest at some point in the past. Through this consciousness we derived a goal to replace habitats in 100 times the space we occupy by 2025. MAS currently operates on 250 acres of land in Sri Lanka and in 2017 alone we aim to match this footprint by replacing habitats in 250 acres of land.
