THE OCEAN STRAINER

MAS piloted this programme as part of our Oceans Project. The Ocean Strainer is Sri Lanka’s first floating trash trap, a device engineered to arrest the migration of waste into the sea. The Ocean Strainer acts as a barrier for waste flowing into the ocean, allowing us to collect it, and segregate it into recyclable waste or dispose of it responsibly. The trap is designed to suit Sri Lanka’s extensive canal systems and marine environment, with the annual capacity to capture over 65,000 kg of waste that flows freely through these water bodies. With the potential to replicate this solution across canals and rivers in Sri Lanka and in other countries in the region, we are looking forward to having the newly established MAS Foundation for Change work on scaling up this initiative with the support of likeminded partners across geographies.
